ABOUT BELLVUE

Bellvue is an unincorporated, sleepy community of 2,000 people, situated just a few miles north of Fort Collins, by the mouth of Poudre Canyon. The town is tucked in between the foothills and the Dakota Hogback Ridge, in Pleasant Valley.

Jacob and Elizabeth Flowers and their family arrived in the area in 1873 and established a homestead in Pleasant Valley. They eventually platted the town, naming it Bellevue (‘beautiful view’ in French). The Flowers recognized the potential of the area, particularly with the nearby stone quarries and the anticipated arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad. They built a mercantile store at the intersection of Rist Canyon Road and County Road 23, which later became the Bellvue Grange. Meg Dunn has written a beautiful article, entitled ‘The Flowers of Bellvue’, describing in detail the history of the Flowers family and the town.

AMENITIES OF THE
BELLVUE COMMUNITY

A lush area on the south side of the Cache la Poudre River, Bellvue is at the mouth of Rist Canyon, concealed from the open Colorado Piedmont near Fort Collins and LaPorte by the Bellvue Dome, also known as Goat Hill. The valley formerly stretched southward between the hogback and foothills into the area now inundated by Horsetooth Reservoir. The main agriculture in the valley is cultivation of hay and other crops, as well as cattle and horse ranches. The Colorado Division of Wildlife maintains a large trout hatchery in the valley just north of the Bellvue town site.

Gateway Natural Area and Lory State Park are both fantastic outdoor getaways in the Bellvue area. Mishawaka Amphitheatre is set along the banks of the Cache La Poudre River and headlines musical acts most of the year.
